Your local roadworthy inspector in Newstead

Newstead isn't just another suburb on the list. It's where the ute is parked overnight, which is why "how soon can you get here?" usually has a very short answer here. Call in the morning from anywhere in 4006 and there's a good chance the certificate is in your hand before the end of the day.

It's also a small suburb with two very different halves, and the half you're in changes how the job runs. On the river side you have the Gasworks precinct and the apartment buildings around Skyring Terrace, Longland Street and Commercial Road: secure basements, boom gates, numbered bays. On the other side, along Breakfast Creek Road and the older blocks behind it, there's still a working strip of showrooms, warehouses and workshops, where the car is usually sitting in an open yard or on the kerb and we can walk straight up to it.

Both are easy for us. They just need slightly different things from you before we arrive, and knowing which one you're in saves a phone call.

Basements, boom gates and where the inspection happens

Most Newstead addresses are apartments, so most Newstead inspections happen in a basement car park. That's completely normal for us and it's not a reason to drive the car somewhere else.

  • Your bay is usually fine. We need enough room to open the doors, walk around the car and get underneath it. If your bay is pinned between two pillars or a storage cage, it's quicker to move the car up to a visitor bay or onto the street first.
  • Tell us how to get in. A boom gate code, a swipe fob, or just meeting us at the entrance. Building access is the single most common reason a Newstead job runs late, and it takes one text message to avoid.
  • Low clearance doesn't matter. Our vehicle stays up on the street and we come down on foot with the gear, so a 2.1 m height limit at the ramp is irrelevant.
  • The road test is short. Brakes have to be checked on the road rather than in a car park, so we take the car for a brief run on the flatter, quieter streets behind Gasworks instead of straight out into Breakfast Creek Road traffic. You're welcome to come along.
  • Kerbside parking: a lot of Newstead is metered or signed 2P. If the car is on the street, pick a spot with clear road in front and behind, and tell us the time limit so we can work around it.

The cars we see around Newstead

Newstead skews new. It's a suburb of one and two-car apartment households, company cars and lease returns, so a large share of the vehicles we certify here are only a few years old and have spent most of their life doing short trips across the inner north.

That changes what actually fails. Late-model cars rarely have the obvious problems, but low-kilometre city cars have a pattern of their own: tyres with plenty of tread in the middle and none on the inside edge, a park brake gone lazy after a year of sitting in a basement bay, a windscreen chip sitting right in the wiper sweep, a numberplate or brake light nobody has looked at since delivery. None of it is dramatic and most of it is cheap, but it's worth a walk around the car before we turn up.

The other regular Newstead job is the registration transfer. This is a suburb people move to for work, often from another state, so we see plenty of cars that need a Queensland safety certificate before interstate registration can be brought across. Same certificate, same flat rate, same visit.

Roadworthy questions, answered

  • When do I need one? When selling or transferring a registered vehicle, transferring interstate rego to Queensland, or re-registering an unregistered vehicle.
  • How long is it valid? A QLD safety certificate lasts 2 months or 2,000 km (whichever comes first) for private sellers.
  • Do I need to be there? We need access to the vehicle and keys for a short test drive. As long as keys are accessible, you don't have to wait around.
  • What if it doesn't pass? You get a clear list of what needs attention, get it fixed by any mechanic you like, then we re-check it.
  • Can you inspect it in the basement? Yes. Basement car parks are our normal Newstead workplace. We just need building access and a bay with room to move around the car.
  • It hasn't moved in months. Is that a problem? Only if something has seized or gone flat. A battery that won't crank stops the job, so if the car has been sitting since last year, turn it over the day before and tell us if anything sounds off.
  • How fast is same day, really? We're in the suburb, so in Newstead it's a genuine option rather than a promise we're hoping to keep. Call early and we'll tell you straight away whether today works.
