Albion is a short run straight up Sandgate Road from our Newstead depot, and it's the most car-minded suburb we cover. The Sandgate Road strip through Albion has been lined with dealerships, yards and workshops for as long as anyone can remember, and the streets behind it are still genuinely industrial: warehouses, transport yards, panel shops and trade businesses working away between the rail line and Breakfast Creek.

That gives Albion a very different rhythm to the apartment suburbs closer to town. A good share of our Albion inspections happen at a workplace rather than a house, on an open concrete hardstand with room to move and someone on site with the keys. From our side those are the easiest jobs of the week.

Layered over the top of all that is the newer Albion: apartment buildings that have gone up around the old mill site and along the streets near the station, a stretch of residential Albion up toward Crosby Road, and the pubs and the raceway that give the suburb its landmarks. We cover all of it, and the certificate is issued on the spot wherever the vehicle happens to be.

Work utes, trade vehicles and private sales

Albion sees more work vehicles than anywhere else on our patch. Dual cab utes with trays and canopies, vans fitted out for a trade, and light commercials that have been earning their keep for years.

Those vehicles fail differently to a family car. Constant loads are hard on suspension and tyres, so sagging rear springs, worn shocks and tyres scrubbed unevenly on the edges are the regular finds. Gravel and site work means chipped and cracked windscreens. Older utes get rust where the tray meets the body and around the sills. And anything that's been added on, a bullbar, driving lights, a towbar, a roof rack, has to be fitted and working properly to pass, which is worth a look before we arrive if the accessories went on second-hand.

One honest note about the car yards. If you're buying from a licensed dealer on the Sandgate Road strip, the dealer supplies the safety certificate as part of the sale, so you don't need us. Where we come in is the other side of it: selling privately, transferring registration after an interstate move, re-registering something that's been off the road, or getting the certificate sorted before you list the car so the ad is ready to go. Competing against the yards a few hundred metres up the road, having the certificate already done makes a private ad look a lot more serious.

Roadworthy questions, answered

• When do I need one? When selling or transferring a registered vehicle, transferring interstate rego to Queensland, or re-registering an unregistered vehicle.
• How long is it valid? A QLD safety certificate lasts 2 months or 2,000 km (whichever comes first) for private sellers.
• Do I need to be there? We need access to the vehicle and keys for a short test drive. As long as keys are accessible, you don't have to wait around.
• What if it doesn't pass? You get a clear list of what needs attention, get it fixed by any mechanic you like, then we re-check it.
• I'm buying from a yard on Sandgate Road. Do I need one? No. A licensed dealer supplies the safety certificate with the sale. You need one when you sell privately, transfer interstate registration to Queensland, or re-register a vehicle.
• Can you come to my work? Yes, and in Albion that's most of what we do. Give us a site contact and anything we need to know about gates, sign-in or hi-vis.
• My ute has a canopy, bullbar and driving lights. All fine, as long as they're fitted properly and everything works. Second-hand accessories are worth checking over before we get there.
